A Scary Story near and dear to my heart
So remember how movies were just kinda buckwild before the Hayes Code? And there was a lot of weird horror? One that has always stuck with me is Tod Browning's classic _Freaks_. Like, as a disabled person it's striking to see so many different disabled people in a movie in 1932, including the protagonist, and to have the real root evil of the film be ableism. Well, I found out the movie was inspired by a 1923 short story called "Spurs" by Tod Robbins (apparently Tod was also a real popular name but I digress). The story is very different from the movie but the bones of the story are still there, for sure. The good folks at Random Acts were kind enough to listen to me rave about how much I love this story of unrequited love, manipulation and revenge, and here I am narrating it.
